42 Romantic black and white photos of the canals of Amsterdam. The photos are accompanied by 42 short text contributions by well known inhabitants of Amsterdam including Hans van Mierlo, Jan Six, Elsbeth Etty, Sam Drukker, Charlotte Mutsaers, Rudi van Dantzig, Henk van Os, Ed van Thijn, Bas Heijne & Koos Breukel. They were allowed to choose from the pictures and wrote about their relationship to the city, childhood memories or a poem. Mattie Boom, the curator Photography of the Rijksmuseum wrote the preface.

A selection of the pictures were shown in Museum Van Loon in 2006 and many times afterwards. The photographer is an admirer of classic photographers like Jacob Olie. The pictures (although shot between 1991 and 2009) are in terms of atmosphere, choice of subject and the manner of printing very reminiscent of the old masters. The canals are photographed on the quiet moments of the day. People are skating silhouettes, treets are deserted, hectic is missing. Timeless … A beautifully designed publication with a high nostalgic level.
