It’s almost 30 years ago that photographer Aernout Overbeeke made his journey along the 3500 miles of the Mississippi River for Avenue Magazine. At this time Avenue was the leading and most influential Dutch glossy, always showing interesting stories, and it was beautifully designed.

Aernout started his journey at Lake Itasca, Clearwater Country, where the source of the Mississippi lies, and ended at the Gulf of Mexico near New Orleans. His pictures are detailed, the people on it unprejudiced. Photographing these people and villages, it became an interesting time frame. He used a Linhoff panorama camera, which adds to atmosphere of these intriguing images.
